What is Access Control?

With the passage of time, new technologies have been developed in the safety and security field. These make it easy to implement airtight security measures in areas and situations where it is required. In commercial spaces and public areas, there are always secured areas, where admission needs to be strictly controlled. Access needs to be authorized for security purposes or to make for smooth and hassle-free management of services. Such instances call for the need to prevent public access to a certain area, and allow admission only to people who have the right credentials. This is precisely where access control comes in handy.

An introduction to access control system

The phrase access control is self-explanatory- it denotes controlling or limiting the access to a certain region or area. Whether it is a building, a section of a building, a room or even a small section of a room, access control allows you to control who gets to be allowed to enter. While the most basic form of access control can be something as simple as a lock and key, nowadays the term is almost always used to denote electronic security systems which make access control a breeze.

The main purpose of electronic access control is to let authorized users have access to a particular area, while not allowing access to others. These systems make use of electronic locking technology to lock doors and allow only authorized personnel to unlock these doors when they need to enter or exit. While there basic function is to provide security, they can also be coupled with other systems and used as a powerful management tool in commercial scenarios.

Planning for the system

If you are planning to set up access control, here are a few points you might want to consider –

  • The exact number of different points of entry and exit.
  • The level of security you need.
  • Management of access control from a centralized location.
  • Scalability.
  • Interfacing with other important systems like fire safety, CCTV etc.

With these factors in mind, you can then go on to choose the right access control solution for your needs.

Features

There are many different technologies that are used in access control systems to facilitate easy entry to authorized personnel. Here are a few important ones –

  • PIN Lock – Featuring an electronic keypad at every entry point, this lets users key in a preset numeric PIN code to disengage the electronic lock and gain access.
  • Keycards / Smart Cards – These cards contain electronic identification data and are issued to all personnel. Swiping a card at the entry point releases the lock and provides admittance.
  • Proximity Reader – A non-contact method of reading electronic cards, this system provides users with a reader device that can read electronic card info from a distance.
  • Biometric Locks – Biometric locks are advanced devices which can scan user biometrics and confirm identity to facilitate admittance. Fingerprint, Face or Retina scans can be implemented, as can be voice-actuated locking systems.

Application

Overall, access control systems have application beyond security. Many businesses also combine them with other important systems like time attendance management, payroll management, vending machines and car parking management. Doing so can aid in smooth operation, decrease process times and make things move along at a swift pace.
